Babywearing: Must-know Safety Tips

Babywearing is an amazing way for you and your little cutie to still be close and connected while you get some work done. But, it is important to practice precaution and ensure that your baby is carried correctly. Here are some important baby-wearing safety tips for you and caregivers to take note of before heading out. The babywearing community calls it T.I.C.K.S.

T: Tight — Your baby's position should be upright and tight enough in a carrier that they are held safely against the wearer. This is to help prevent accidental falls.

I: In view at all times — Your baby's sweet face should always be visible to you so you can monitor their breathing. This also helps to keep a better eye on your baby's mood if you can see them.

C: Close enough to kiss —  If your baby's head is not kissable when you lower your head, do reposition them in the carrier until they are high enough to kiss with little effort.

K: Keep chin off chest — Look at your baby and check to make sure there is a gap about two fingers wide under their chin. If they are in a good upright position with their spine curved and legs squatting, it is unlikely that their chin will drop.

S: Supported back — While you want your baby to be safe and secure, avoid over-tightening the carrier over their back. The carrier should be tight enough that there is no gap between your body and your baby, but loose enough that you can slide your hand into the carrier.

Though your baby should be your focus, however, do ensure the carrier feels comfortable for you as well. A carrier that is positioned improperly may give you back issues or create injury and soreness, especially with long periods of wear.

Also, remember to check for wear and tear. Always double-check all buckles and harnesses, and ensure there is no loose stitching, before each outing.
