There will come a time you are looking at your baby and the floor at the same time. Not because you are thinking about how did you end up with a child but is the floor really safe for your baby to crawl on once they start to crawl or how do you make the hard floor softer? Just something to provide some cushion for when your child starts to walk and fall. And mind you, they will fall many, many times.
While it's true a playmat serves as a cushion when your baby falls, it also doubles as a safe space for your child's playtime. But there are other benefits that you might have not known that are just equally important!
The playmat benefits
1. Cognitive development
Having a playmat helps in assisting your child's cognitive development by teaching them Primary Circular Reactions and the basics of cause and effect. Primary Circular Reactions involve coordinating sensation and new schemas. For instance, when your child is playing on the playmat and accidentally kicks a rattle, and later, intentionally repeat to kick it. These actions are repeated because your child finds them enjoyable.
Engaging with a new sensation or stimuli and seeing the results of their actions is how they learn the basics of cause and effect. A playmat makes the perfect place for this to happen as it is large enough for your child to explore at their own pace.
2. Visual development
Most babies start to crawl at 8 months. Letting your baby crawls on the playmat helps to improve their visual development. That's where the colourful designs on the playmat come to play. And the more your baby crawls, the more they develop their eye-hand-foot-body coordination. Early walkers who do minimal crawling may not learn to use their eyes as well as babies who crawl often.
3. Gross motor development
A lot of crawlings are not only good for cognitive and visual developments only, but they also help to promote gross motor development, which means your baby develops their core muscle groups. The muscles at the arms, legs, hands, torso, neck, and more start to strengthen. These muscles will later help your baby to stand, walk, run, and skip.
A playmat is not only perfect for tummy time it also acts as the safe and cushioned ground for your baby in their different development stages. From tummy time to playtime, your baby will always have a soft ground to fall on.
