Tips to Teach Your Kid to Drink from a Straw Cup

Straw cups are a game-changer — less mess, easy to clean, and a great step in helping your baby drink more independently. But for many little ones, using a straw doesn’t come naturally. If you're wondering how to start, don’t worry — we’ve got you.

Here are a few simple tips to help your baby learn how to sip from a straw:

1. Use a small straw or small-sized cup

Start with a training cup that’s designed for little hands and tiny mouths. A shorter, soft straw is easier for babies to manage — they don’t need to suck as hard, and they’re less likely to get frustrated. Smaller cups are also lighter and easier for them to hold on their own, which makes practice time much smoother.

2. Use water or their favourite milk

Stick with light liquids like plain water or their regular milk — something they already enjoy and are familiar with. Cold water might be too shocking at first, so room temperature is a good start. If your baby is already used to a certain drink, they’re more likely to try sipping when it’s offered in a straw cup.

3. Demonstrate how to use it

Babies learn by watching — especially when it comes to something new. Try using a straw yourself and let them see how it works. Sit across from them and exaggerate the sipping motion to grab their attention. You can even gently guide the cup to their mouth and help them wrap their lips around the straw to explore it on their own.

4. Pick a cup that comes with a lid or cover

A covered straw cup is your best friend during this stage. It helps reduce spills (because drops and shakes will happen!) and keeps the straw clean when you’re out and about. Look for ones with a flip-top lid or a leak-proof design, so your baby can use it confidently during meals, playtime, or outings.
